The rise of the independent coffee shop on the UK high street

Coffee shops on every corner was something which was once more likely to be attributed to America but now it seems that this may well become a possibility in many UK towns and cities.

Just take a walk down your local high street and you are likely to spot several chains of well known coffee shops as well as a number of independent traders as well.

Much research has been done into why coffee shops have continued to be successful despite the recent economic difficulties the UK has faced and it seems that, mostly, it comes down to the affordability of a hot drink.  Treating yourself to a nice, ‘proper’ coffee is more affordable then buying a new outfit, for example.

Interestingly, it would seem that customers are becoming more knowledgeable about the coffee they drink, and are becoming more discerning about where they might choose to spend their hard-earned money when treating themselves.  Much is being made about supporting local businesses, which includes smaller, specialist and independent coffee shops as opposed to the larger chains.  It is not a given however that a smaller coffee shop will be an instant success.  Although customers do seem to be making a beeline for this type of business there is much to consider in order to make a success of it from the coffee shop design to the types of coffee offered.

If you are this type of business then here are some quick ideas to boost your business and ensure that customers are drawn to your shop:-

Stand Out

Gone is the need to just serve the bog-standard coffee with milk and sugar.  Nowadays customers want to be adventurous, they want to see menus which stand out and which allow them to try different types of coffee.  Although it makes little sense to only serve unique, specialist flavours, you could try offering a ‘coffee of the month’ or ‘special of the week’.

Be Creative

Make sure that when people walk through the door they know there is something different about you.  Take the time to plan your coffee shop design so that it is inviting and different.  The way your coffee shop looks needs to be a part of your branding, and something which draws customers in and makes them want to come back.  Of course this depends on the type of atmosphere you want to create; large, squashy sofas offer something different to formica table and chair sets neatly spaced out.  Don’t be afraid to try something unique, it just might pay off.

Reward Loyalty

Offering a loyalty card for repeat customers is a great way of drawing them back time and again, and of getting them to tell their friends and family.

Get Online

Nothing works better for a business these days than a strong online presence.  Social media sites can be a great way of drumming up new customers and expanding your reach for those who may be searching for a new haunt to get their caffeine fix.
